Dr. Steven Wiersma
Dr. Steven Wiersma is a seasoned global health leader with over 40 years of experience as a physician, public health expert, and diplomat. His career spans clinical medicine, international development, and health diplomacy, with a focus on quality improvement, capacity building, and the integration of innovative health technologies.
Most recently, Dr. Wiersma served as a Medical Officer with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), detailed to the Department of Defense HIV/AIDS Prevention Program at the U.S. Embassy in Lusaka, Zambia. In this dual role as Defense Health Attaché and Regional Director for Africa, he oversaw public health programs in 35 countries across the continent—strengthening partnerships, guiding strategic investments, and advancing regional health security.
Board-certified in Preventive Medicine and Public Health, Dr. Wiersma has held senior-level assignments with U.S. government agencies, the World Health Organization (WHO), academic institutions, and non-governmental organizations. His long- and short-term postings have taken him across Africa, Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and North America, reflecting a career dedicated to improving health outcomes on a global scale.
